Hola Northwesterners, there is awesome stuff happening at the Frye this Friday in honor of their R.Crumb exhibition! Most notably Fine Comixer Dave Lasky will be giving a zine/comix workshop, and Fine Comixers Davey Oil and Stephan Gruber will be doing a Slide Rule, an A/V comics performance!
”Slide Rule in a museum. Jam Comics in a museuem. “Book-It” doing Crumb comics as live theater. In a museum. It should be fun.” - DL

ZAPPED! Zine and Comic Laboratory
Greg Stump, David Lasky and Jessica Gomes
Frye Art Studio
7-10pm
Presented with Richard Hugo House, three of Seattle’s finest zine and comics artists share their DIY secrets in the Frye studio. Highlighting the zine’s history, selections from ZAPP (Hugo House’s Zine Archive and Publishing Project) are on view. Stump, Lasky, and Gomes orchestrate a “jam” with you (yes, you) on a collaborative zine which will be published and distributed before the evening ends.
Slide Rule Comic Strip Slideshow
Davey Oil, Stefan Gruber, Tyler Gillies and Todbott
Frye Auditorium
Two performances: 8pm and 9pm
Seattle’s own Slide Rule Comic Strip Slideshow Players mix up a multimedia salad of digital video and hand drawn cartoons, live music and electronic sound, animation and live performance to serve up unique theatrical experiences. For Bootlegging Slide Rule performs all original comics confronting R Crumb’s themes of enlightenment, disappointment, confession and outrage. With funny voices!

Olycon was so great. I won some awesome prizes for my cap’n haddock imitation, we had a great panel, performed perhaps the best Slide Rule ever (not due to mine but it was still pride-worthy to have such talented friends!), I sold several comics, was made to feel quite famous when scads of people knew me and I didnt know them, since they STILL talk me up at Danger Room (YAY), Pat gave me a free t-shirt since I’m “old school,” (Pat and Kendras lil girl is SIX, and already a good artist…she was a CELL when i left town!). I stared wistfully at all the comics i couldnt buy, fervedly talked to fellow artists about brush technique and swooned at ellen forneys slide show. It was super cool to see/hear Ivan Brunetti
, he’s not nearly as unnerving as he is in his comics and in general was completely diff from my mental picture. Best of all i bonded w/ all my good Moxie-esque fellows and ladies and feel the highest sense of comix family and comeraderie. Three cheers for comix! hip! hip!
